What Are Some Early Pregnancy Exercises?

When you're pregnant health is something to pay close attention to. Most women understand that they're 'eating for two', and pay special attention to their diet, but some may neglect to keep themselves in good physical shape by doing some safe exercises. This is not to suggest you should take up running marathons, but staying active can help maintain your health, and that of the baby, throughout pregnancy.
It's a good idea to speak with your doctor before taking up any exercise regimen to ensure that it is safe for you to do so. What's considered safe for one woman may not be considered safe for another. Remember, you will pay extra attention to your health during pregnancy, and your doctor might run additional tests to make sure you're healthy. If it's determined that you should not exercise during your pregnancy or if you should cut back significantly or avoid certain exercises, follow the doctor's orders. Women with bleeding or spotting during pregnancy, low placenta, weak cervix, or a history of recurrent miscarriage or premature births and early labor may be encouraged not to exercise. Your health and that of your baby is most important.
One common exercise during pregnancy is yoga. Most recommend avoiding Bikram yoga, or hot yoga, because it is performed in a hot environment. Many pregnant women choose restorative yoga, which is a type of restful yoga that requires props such as blankets, pillows, blocks, chairs, walls, and other items to assume certain yoga position. Make sure you inform the instructor that you are pregnant before taking the class. The instructor may advise you to assume other poses when other class participants assume certain poses that may be deemed unsafe. Some restorative yoga classes are designed specifically for pregnant women.
Swimming, walking, stationary biking and other low-impact exercises are generally considered safe during pregnancy. You should avoid exercises that require you hold your breath, however, so avoid swimming underwater. Do not engage in any activity in which there's a chance you fall over (biking, skiing, etc.), or in any contact sport including softball and volley ball. Jumping, bouncing and running should be avoided as well.
Again, it's imperative that you speak with your doctor before engaging in any activity or exercise; even those that are mentioned in this article. Some women may be encouraged to avoid certain activities, or exercise altogether, so check with your doctor first.
